Sani Pass

This is the only route into the mountain kingdom of Lesotho from the east, and is passable only by four-wheel-drive vehicle, foot or horse.


Expeditions can be booked via the Sani Pass Hotel (see Hotels in South Africa).

As the top of the Pass is nearly 3,000m (10,000ft) above sea level, it is cool and windy. Warm clothing is recommended.

The Sani Pass cuts through the beautiful and striking Drakensberg mountains.

Lush green hills and stark rock formations nestle alongside each other, and there is a mass of flowers, birds and animals to see (see Climate and Nature in KwaZulu Natal).

And of course the view is stunning!
