South Africa

Jo'burg was founded in the late 19th century when gold was discovered, and rapidly became a boomtown. Today it covers 200 square miles and houses over three million people, more than 7% of the population of South Africa. Crime is a big problem and our tour did not extend into the centre of Johannesburg. Instead, we stayed in a hotel (see link below) in the wealthy suburb of Rosebank which was safe during the daytime.
