The Garden Route: Knysna

The pretty town of Knysna (pronounced 'nigh-zner') is on the banks of a large lagoon which has a narrow access to the sea known as 'the Heads'. Many of the area's wealthiest people have homes beside the lagoon.

For the traveller Knysna has everything, banks, shops, cafes etc, set in attractive surroundings. We spent about an hour shopping in the market, the boutiques and the mall. Most items were reasonably priced, especially for those prepared to haggle.

Trips round the lagoon are available, as are journeys on the Outinque Choo-Tjoe steam train. We had a really good meal at a restaurant called 'Maureen's Place'. More about all of these can be found here.
