The Sphinx

The Sphinx, Giza, Cairo

Situated adjacent to the Pyramids at Giza, the Sphinx is one of the most famous landmarks in the World. It was said to have been built by Chephren whose pyramid stands on a plateau behind it (far left of the picture above).

With the head of a man and the body of a lion, the Sphinx stands 20m (66ft) high. The statue is made of limestone which has eroded over the millennia, but there has been some restoration work in recent years. It is viewed by the public from a ramp above the pit in which it sits, but this tends to reduce some of the impact of the statue's size.

Sphinx viewing ramp
From behind the Sphinx you can see the viewing ramp. Also notable is how close the city has encroached towards the pyramids/sphinx site
