Some of Egypt's ancient relics were hewn out of a single block of stone. At a quarry near Aswan an obelisk
was carved out, prior to being transported to its final destination, probably
via the Nile. Unfortunately, the block cracked before the obelisk was
finished and the half-complete project still sits embedded in the rock.
The site is quite hot as the
sun reflects from the whitish rocks, and there is little to see apart
from the obelisk itself. It is nevertheless interesting to see the techniques
used to create massive structures thousands of years ago.
