On a plateau overlooking Cairo,
the Citadel is in the medieval part of the city. This fortress was begun
by Saladin in the 12th century and housed Egypt's rulers for 700 years.
The view over the flat roofs of Cairo is fantastic and it gave us our first glimpse of the Pyramids
in the far distance.
The Citadel site houses several small
museums and three mosques, including the Alabaster Mosque of Mohamed Ali. We were permitted to go into the mosque, though of course we had to remove our shoes, and make sure bare arms were covered up. |
